Legends racing
For the ultimate excitement either as a driver or a spectator, not many forms of racing compare to Legend cars.
Built as 5/8-scale replicas of early NASCAR stock cars (1934 & 1937 Fords, Chevys and Dodges) Legends appeal to all ages of racers, who can begin competing in them as young as age twelve at many tracks, and age 14 at others. But it is not a "kids" series by any means. Race winners and regularly-competitive drivers range from their early teens all the way into their fifties, sixties and even their seventies!
The appeal of Legends begins with their impressive acceleration and power. On a road course these 135 horse-power 1100 pound cars can reach speeds of up to 140 mph, but generally run 70-90 mph on most ovals. But don't let the "slower" oval speeds fool you. Just as these cars look like early 20th century cars, they handle like them as well! They are very lively under acceleration and on corner entry, teaching drivers to be "up on the wheel" as they say in racing. Which means that to run up front, drivers need to have quick hands, stay focused, anticipate what the car may do next and have a very competitive nature. That being said, there are also drivers who are a little less adventuresome and who have a blast racing more calmly a little further back in the pack.
And while drivers who have raced Legends as well as the "bigger" cars will tell you that Legends require easily as much skill to run competitively as it takes to run the bigger cars, the series was originally built to be a more affordable level of racing. So they are generally much less expensive to race than bigger cars. With Yamaha 1200cc and 1250cc motors, they use very little fuel in a day, and entry fees are usually no more than $35 per driver/car combination on race day.
So whether you are looking to enter racing for the first time, or you're a semi-retired racer looking for a more affordable alternative to the big money that even local racing can consume in other series, Legends should definitely be a consideration!
